Life after Divorce: 10 survival tips for Men

Life after divorce can be a difficult and emotional time for men.  Often women initiate the divorce, but no matter who ended the marriage, it can be a time of loss, grieving and adjusting to a new life.  Here’s Vital Remedy’s 10 survival tips to help men cope with the aftermath of a divorce:

  1. Allow yourself to grieve. It’s important to acknowledge and process the emotions that come with the end of your marriage.
  2. Seek support. Talking to friends and family, or a therapist like myself can work through your feelings and provide a sense of validation and understanding without judgement.
  3. Take care of yourself. Eating well, exercising and getting enough sleep can help to improve your overall well-being.
  4. If you have children, focus on their needs.  Children often are the source of further stress during your separation or divorce.  You may be grieving the loss of spending time around your child if you have had to move out of the family home, or you may worry about how the split will affect them.  Focus on your childs needs, including their need for space or distance even if that may hurt you or seem unfair.  And try not to use your child in any arguements or negotiations. See this as a new chapter as a Father, a time of new opportunities, find new or interesting things to do with your children.
  5. Spend time with people who make you feel good, maybe catch up or re-establish relationships that may have drifted since getting married.  Having strong social friendships has a major influence on our long-term mental health and wellbeing.
  6. Don’t jump straight into a new relationship.  After a break-up try to avoid launching straight into a new intimate relationship.  It may not be the answer to lifting yourself out of that dark place.  Dating when your mind is not in the right place can further damage your confidence leaving you feeling confused and might compound the hurt and anger.
  7. Find new hobbies and activities. Engaging in new interests can help to take your mind off the divorce and provide a sense of purpose and fulfilment.
  8. Reflect on your relationship when the time feels right to do so, think about what you have learnt from this time and from your marriage.  Try not to dwell on what you or your partner may have gone wrong, including any anger or guilt that accompanies that.  But think about the good times, what you have learnt about yourself and how this may help you positively in the future.
  9. Focus on the present moment. It can be very easy to get caught up in regrets about the past or worries of the future, but try to focus on the present moment and what you can do to improve your life now in this moment.
  10. Be patient with yourself. Healing takes time and it is important to be kind to yourself as you work through the process.

It’s important to remember that everyone’s experience with divorce is unique and that there is no “right” way to deal withLife after Divorce it.  It is a process that requires tie and patience, and it is important to reach out for help if you need it.
